Manufacturing’s New Mandate: The Tools for Leadership,
Dan Ciampa,
Wiley, 1988

This, Dan’s first book, was the first to outline the connection necessary between three manufacturing strategies—Total Quality, Just-in-Time Manufacturing, and Computer Integrated Manufacturing. It outlines what each strategy entails, the specific organizational changes that must be made in order for them to succeed, and emphasizes the senior manager’s crucial role in integrating these strategies from top to bottom in a corporation. It lays out how to establish awareness for change at every level, relevant aspects of the organization culture and people-related issues a manager must solve for operational improvement, and the techniques that have proven successful for institutionalizing change. When it was published it was the only guide covering all three strategies from a senior manager’s point of view.

Some comments that leaders made at the time:

"Dan Ciampa’s new book is an extremely thoughtful and timely addition to today’s business literature. In a shrinking world and a marketplace which is demanding ever-improved quality and service, this book provides a unique insight on the human dimension of both the leader and the culture to be changed. It provides a very practical and useable guide to the behavioral requirements involved in changing, creating, and then sustaining the new culture needed to effectively compete in today’s world markets. This is a book to be used."
Edward T. Fogarty, President,
Colgate-US

"Dan Ciampa has provided executives with a substantive set of actions for implementing the change to a TQ/JIT/CIM environment...Dan Ciampa’s book provides an important framework for mapping a managerial approach to achieving greater competitiveness through modern manufacturing practices."
Robert Landel,
The Darden School, University of Virginia
